Have you ever decided to remain unmoved in response to someone else’s sarcasm?

Some sarcasms are so cheap. For example, “don’t / aren’t we all” can be said in response to anything remotely relateable, like “I accidentally told my boss ‘love you’” or “I think my cat hates me”. “Living the dream” is often said when someone has had a tangentially negative (or depending on the person, positive) experience like “my girlfriend cheated on me” or “I have atherosclerosis”. “Must be nice” denotes mild resentment that can surface in virtually every social interaction, particularly when confronted with the privilege of others.

Cheap sarcasms are simply performative empathy and, apart from getting a few laughs, have nothing to do with real closeness. I don’t like how they flatten everything into a shared experience even when no one actually gives a fuck.

But maybe that’s what the person who shares the experience wants. A little white lie, because no one gives them attention at home.

I am seemingly unable to lie as such. It is therefore through no fault of my own, other than my morals, that I am unable to engage in social interactions. Perhaps my preferred mode of interaction is non-verbal.
